Make practice questions and flashcards
Turn class notes into a quiz or flashcards in seconds, and use built-in study modes that give hints instead of answers.
The short answer
AI can turn your child’s class notes into practice questions or flashcards in seconds. It works best when you tell it to give hints, not answers, so your child does the thinking.
Turn notes into a practice quiz
Copy the key points from your child’s notes or textbook chapter (or type a short summary), then ask:
Here are my child’s notes on [topic] for grade [X]: [paste notes]. Ask five practice questions, one at a time. Wait for an answer before the next one. If the answer is wrong, give a hint, not the answer.
Asking for questions one at a time turns it into a back-and-forth quiz instead of a list your child can skim.
Make flashcards
Using these notes, make 10 flashcards: a short question on one side and a one-line answer on the other.
You can copy them onto index cards, or read them aloud as a quick game at dinner.
Use a built-in study mode
Two popular chatbots have special modes designed to teach rather than just answer:
- ChatGPT: Study mode. Available on all ChatGPT plans, including free. [1] On the website, type @study in the message box, or tap + and choose Study. OpenAI says it uses a “Socratic-style approach,” asking what you already know and what step you’d try next. [1] It may still sometimes give a direct answer, so you can ask it to stick to hints. [1]
- Gemini: Guided Learning. Sign in, then in the message box choose More tools and then Guided Learning. [2] Gemini’s learning tools can also create practice questions and quizzes. Google is still rolling some of these features out to the mobile app. [2]
These buttons and menus change often. If yours look different, look for words like “study,” “learn” or “tools.”
Before pasting a worksheet, remove your child’s name, school and other personal details. And check the quiz answers against the textbook. AI can occasionally get an answer wrong.
Try being the student yourself first, then swap in your child’s topic:
Ask me five questions about the water cycle for a 10-year-old, one at a time. Wait for my answer each time. If I'm wrong, give me a hint instead of the answer.
- Paste the notes and ask for questions one at a time, with hints, not answers.
- Flashcards take one request; copy them onto cards for a quick game.
- Try ChatGPT’s Study mode or Gemini’s Guided Learning for built-in tutoring.
